Pierre Pratt was born on February 8, 1962, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is a son of Marcel Pratt and Sylviane Pratt (maiden name Rouleau).
Pierre Pratt developed his passion for illustration in his early years. He sketched a lot almost everything he saw or everyone he met. Impressed by “Tin-tin” comics, he had an idea of creating his own series.
After graduating from high school, Pratt entered Ahuntsic College in Montreal where he studied graphic design.
Pierre Pratt started his career in the early 1980s as an author of short comic strips for magazines. Soon, he abandoned the field and turned to book writing and illustration.
His first book published in English translation, ‘Les fantaisies de l’oncle Henri’ (Uncle Henry's Dinner Guests) appeared in 1990. It was a surreal fantasy in which the chickens pictured on Uncle Henry’s shirt come alive during an otherwise quiet dinner, though only the children at the table seem to notice.
Later, Pratt has teamed up with many children’s authors in addition to his own ongoing publications. One of his frequent collaborators became Remy Simard, and their common works have been often noted for their absurdist tendencies. In the first and most critically successful, ‘My Dog is an Elephant’, a boy tries to save an elephant from being sent back to the zoo by disguising him as a moose, a dinosaur, a butterfly, and finally, as the boy’s father. Their second collaboration, ‘The Magic Boot’, tells a story that explains why the landmass of Italy looks like a boot when viewed from above. The latest common work of an author and illustrator is a 2014 volume ‘Gustave’.
Pratt’s first effort at telling his own story appeared in ‘Follow That Hat!’, in which Leon chases his hat around the world in every form of transportation imaginable. Although the first attempt at storytelling was found by some to fall into the same trap of over-sophisticated writing that had caught some of the authors Pratt has worked with, it was generally well-received. During the subsequent years, Pierre Pratt has authored and illustrated many other volumes the number of which attend about fifty items.
Illustrations made by Pratt have been demonstrated at many international exhibitions, including his native Canada, Slovakia, Japan, France, and the United States.
Nowadays, Pierre Pratt shares his time between Montreal and Lisbon.

1998Oil pastel and acrylic paint are media most commonly used by Pierre Pratt. His absurdist and sometimes even silly pictures are similar to those of Henri Matisse or Edward Hopper.
Quotations: "I have lots of ideas, but sometimes it's difficult to get them out. Once I start working, though, the ideas usually begin to flow."
