Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1806.
Career
Served as aide to General James Wilkinson, 1807. Member expedition to restore Mandan chief, received commendation for role in battle with Arikaras. Partner Saint Louis (Missouri) Fur Company, 1808-1811.
Served as captain Territorial Militia, during War of 1812.
Appointed judge Court of Common Pleas, Saint Louis, 1813, did not serve. Led trading expedition to Upper Arkansas River, 1815, captured by Spanish, 1817, imprisoned in Santa Fe for 2 months.
Continued trading ventures in Kansas and Missouri region. Established trading business in Arkansas Osages country on Verdigris River in middle of settlements of many Indian tribes, 1823.
Maintained a feudal establishment with Indian servants and slaves near what is now Salina, Kansas.
Built new trading post on site of abandoned Camp Holmes, 1835. Served as Indian emissary for United States Government, 1837, helped pacify hostile tribes in Oklahoma and Kansas
