Came to American with Lafayette, 1777, joined Continental Army, commissioned captain engineers, 1778. Major by special resolution of Congress, 1783. Surveyor and planner new federal city of Washington, District of Columbia, forced to resign because his plans were so expensive, 1792 (government began remodeling city along his original lines, 1901).
Employed to lay out “Capital scene of manufactures” for Society for Useful Manufactures, 1792.
