Governor Trois Rivières, New France, 1733-1743. Governor Louisiana, 1743-1753. Governor New France, 1755-1760, his incapabilities substantially contributed to French loss of New France. Countermanded General Montcalm’s orders at Plains of Abraham, 1759 (important factor in French defeat). Took charge after Montcalm’s death, surrendered Montreal, 1760. Returned to Paris, France, imprisoned, 1760. Acquitted of dishonesty in subsequent trial, 1761, but not of culpability.
