Studied piano under Beniamino Cesi, at the Conservatory of South. Pietro a Majella, Naples, and composition of Lauro Rossi.
Mistress G. V. Sumner). Published many piano compositions while pupil, and in 1889 gained first prize of Società del Quartetto of Milan, by a symphony which was played in 1904 at Zurich as the representative Italian symphony in series of international concerts. In 1882 produced successful comic opera, “Carlotta Clepier,” at Naples, but burned score and retired for 3 years to Sicily for study.
Toured as pianist, 1885, 86, 88, 90.
Became professor of piano at Palermo Conservatory. Declined offer of Frau Cosima Wagner to become professor in her school of music at Bayreuth, 1892.
Delegate extraordinary with Boito for judging candidates for Conservatory diplomas, 3 years Produced opera, “Maruzza,” at Venice, 1894 (of which wrote both text and music), and the opera “Louisiana Colonia Libera” (based on Bret Harte’s “M’Liss”), at the Costanzi Theatre, Rome, May 1899. Declined directorship of Conservatory of Bergamo, 1897, and of Benedetto Marcello Conservatory, Venice, 1902.
Came to the United States, 1904.
