Gupta-Bhaya was born on May 2, 1945 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India; the son of Nibaran Chandra Gupta-Bhaya and Renu Roy Gupta.
Gupta-Bhaya received a Bachelor of Science degree from Calcutta University in 1964. Three years later he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in 1971 from Cambridge University. Also Pinaki received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Columbia University in 1972.
Gupta-Bhaya began his career as a research associate at Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in 1972. A year later he was appointed a lecturer at Indian Institute of Technology. In 1977, Pinaki took a position of an assistant professor at the same institute. Since 1995 he was an associate professor at Indian Institute of Technology. Nowadays Gupta-Bhaya is a professor emeritus at that institute.
Gupta-Bhaya is a member of Biophysics Society.
On December 6, 1977 Pinaki Gupta-Bhaya married Sumana Dasgupta. They have a child.
