Of Māori descent, he identified with the Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Whakaue and Te Arawa iwi. He was born in Otaki, Manawatu/Horowhenua, New Zealand in 1890. Kingi Te Ahoaho Tahiwi was an elder brother.
