Background
Domingo was born Jan. 21, 1941, in Madrid, Spain. His parents, both singers in the Spanish light-opera tradition, settled in Mexico when he was six. He appeared as a child performer in light opera, became a proficient pianist, and studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. After early appearances in Mexico, he took his first major step into the international world of opera in Dallas in 1961. This was followed by a three-year residence in Israel, his debut at the New York City Opera in 1965, and the expansion of his career into every major opera house in the world.

Debut at Monterrey, Mexico 1961. Debut at Metropolitan Opera, New York, 1968. British debut in Verdi’s Requiem at Festival Hall 1969.
Covent Garden debut in Tosca 1971, returned to sing in Aida, Carmen 1973, La Boheme 1974, Un ballo in maschera 1975, La Fanciulla del West. Has taken leading roles in about 50 operas. With New York City Opera since 1965.
Fellow, Royal N. College, of Music. Honorary degree (Royal College, of Music) 1982, (University Complutense de Madrid) 1989. Commander Legion d'honneur.
Recent engagements include Tosca (conducting), Romeo and Juliet at Metropolitan Opera, New York, New York, Aida, II Trovatore in Hamburg, Don Carlos in Salzburg, I vespri siciliani and La forza del destino in Paris, Turandot in Barcelona, Otello in Paris, London and Hamburg, Carmen in Edinburgh, Turandot at the Metropolitan, New York.
