Before World War I, lived abroad as a political emigre. Close to Lenin in Switzerland. Follower of Mach and Avenarius in philosophy.
Returned to Russia after the revolution, 1917. Re-emigrated, 1930. Wrote books on Lenin based on his personal experience and meticulous research (Maloznakomyi Lenin). Lived in France and later in the USA. One of the best researchers of the early period of Bolshevism.
