Chu Pon-shen was born in Shanghai, China in 1885.
Mr. Chu received his college education at St. John's University in 1897-1904 and than went to America as a private student and prepared for college at the Central High School, Washington, D.C., from 1904 to 1905. He entered Yale University in 1905 and studied political science and law. In 1909 he graduated with a Bachelor Of Arts degree.
Chu Pon-shen returned to China in September and in 1910 he passed the examination for returned students held by the Imperial Board of Education and received the degree of Chu-Jen (Master of Arts).
He was the president of the Yale Chinese Students' Club, secretary of the Cosmopolitan Club and manager of the Chinese Students' Monthly between 1907 and 1908.
In May, 1911, Mr. Chu took the Imperial Court examination for civil officials and was appointed senior secretary of the Board of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce he resigned in October, 1911. When the first Revolution broke out at Wuchang and returned to Shanghai, where Chu Pon-shen was appointed chief of the educational department of the Chapei Municipal Council and later elected alderman of the Second Ward of Chapei District. These positions he held until 1912.
In 1913 he was licensed to practise law and in 1924 Chu Pon-shen was appointed adviser to the Cabinet at Beijing (Peking) and he was a legal practitioner in Shanghai since 1924.
