Saint Sylvester I was born about 275 in Rome, Italy.
Reliable information on Sylvester is scanty despite his long pontificate (314-335), although many legends became attached to Sylvester's name in the course of centuries. The best known is the so-called "Donation of Constantine, " a medieval forgery that relates how Constantine, who was afflicted with leprosy, sought out Sylvester in his hiding place on Mount Soracte and was baptized after being cured by the pontiff. In return Constantine is said to have granted Sylvester the privilege of wearing imperial insignia, and to have given him not only supremacy over all the Christian churches of the Empire, but also temporal dominion of Rome, Italy, and the West. His feast is celebrated December 31.
