Her parents were Ganganarayan Dutt (of the Hatkhola Dutt family) and Kamala Kamini Dutt of Kashinath Dutt Road, Baranagore (a suburbs of Kolkata), India. According to the prevailing custom of that time, the Dutts practised family (gotra) exogamy, caste endogamy and intra caste hypergamy. Prabhabati and Janakinath Bose had fourteen children together.
In 1928, Prabhabati was selected president of the Mahila Rashtriya Sangha.
She was very involved in their education and many members of extended Bose family made significant contributions to the Indian society.
