He was educated in Providence, and following graduation at Brown University, entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a student in Architecture.
In 1895 he began professional practice, and was successively a member of the following firms: Clarke & Spaulding (1895-1901); Clarke, Spaulding & Howe, (1901-03); Clarke & Howe.—in partnership with Wallos E. Howe—1903-10; Clarke, Howe & Homer, 1910-13; and finally Clarke & Howe until his retirement in 1928.
During his long career Mr. Clarke was connected with the design and execution of several important buildings in Providence, both public and private, of which should be named the following: U. S. Post Office, Court House and Custom House (1903-07); three buildings at Brown University (1903-27); New England Telephone Exchange (1910); Citizens Savings Bank (1913); Laurel Hill Avenue School (1915); St. Martin's Church (1916) and in addition five buildings at St. George's School, Newport, R. I. (1901-24).
