Merrill was the head college football coach for the Alderson–Broaddus Battlers located in Philippi, West Virginia. He held that position for the 1910 season. His coaching record at Alderson–Broaddus was 1 wins and 3 losses.
As of the conclusion of the 2012 season, this ranks him #8 at Alderson–Broaddus in total wins and #6 at the school in winning percentage (250).
Merrill also did coaching work at Bethany College, also in West Virginia. He later worked as a lawyer
Merrill died of a heart attack due to coronary thrombosis in 1935. At the time of his death, Merrill was serving as a Clerk for the United States. District Court for Northern West Virginia.
He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Nu Epsilon fraternities while at WVU.
