Entered business in 1903. Elected Liberal deputy to the Assembly of the Department of Tolima, 1915. Helped to establish the American Mercantile Bank of Colombia, of which he was a vice-president and later president, 1918.
As a prominent member of the Liberal Party helped to elect Dr. Enrique Olaya Herrera president of Colombia, 1930. Minister Plenipotentiary to Great Britain, 1931. Colombian delegate to the Economic Conference at London, 1933.
Chairman of the Colombian delegation to the Seventh Pan-American Conference of Montevideo, 1933. Lectured at the Sorbonne, 1933. President of Colombia since 1934.
Literary activities: In 1910, with a group of friends, founded the liberal newspaper El Liberal. At one time editor and part owner of El Diario Nacional. Frequent contributor to El Republicano and to leading reviews of Colombia.
