1902 graduate Kiev University.
From 1909 professor, Don Polytech Institute, Novocherkassk. From 1943 professor, Permanent' University. Did extensive research on mineralogy and petrography.
Studied minerals of Kola Pensinsula, Ukraine, Crimea, Transcaucasus and Urals. Studied overall chemical composition of rocks. Developed method of "geometrochemical” analysis and calculated the percentage of various chemicals in the earth as a whole.
Wrote papers on chemistry, mineralogy and petrography of meteorites and on laws governing the composition of meteoric matter. Also studied formation of meteorites in solar system. Published well-known works on experimental mineralogy and petrography, hydrogeology, geochemistry, crystallography and glaciology.
Described various ore and mineral deposits, including Kedabck copper deposits, Khopyor Rayon iron deposits, central Russian phosphorite deposits and Transcaucasian pumic deposits. Helped to compile a catalog of minerals in the Northern Caucasus. 1922 wrote textbook on hydrogeology.
1926 wrote Kurs mestorozlideniy poleznykh iskopayemykh (A Course on Mineral Deposits). A mountain near the Tungus meteorite and a mineral (Chirvinskitc) discovered by North. Kh. Platonov are named after him.
