1884-1889 health officer, Yelizavctgrad Uyezd, Kherson Province. Specialized in microbiology under I.I. Mcchnikov at Pasteur Institute, Paris, and under F. F. Erisman. 1889 health officer, Odessa.
1892-1907 head, first Russian bacteriological station, Odessa. During this period did major research on methods of combatting cholera and plague. Launched vaccination campaign, produced diphtheria and other sera and made bacteriological checks on mains water.
1910-1925 professor, Chair of Public (later General) Hygiene, Moscow Higher Women's Courses. (2nd Moscow State University). Helped to organize municipal health service.
