1914-1917 commanded Cossack brigade, Cossack div, then 3rd Mounted Corps in Russian Army at the front. During 1917 October Rcvol appointed by Kerenskiy to command troops sent from the front to Petrograd to crush the Bolshevik coup. His troops were halted by Red Guards at Pulkovo.
After the Cossacks refused to meddle in ’’purely Russian affairs,” he was captured and then released on his cognizance that he would stop opposing the rcvol. Went to the Don area. May 1918 elected Ataman of the Don Army.
Concluded pact with German occupation forces. Helped found Federation of Cossack Regions and turn it into an independent state. Opposed Denikin, who was allied with the Entente countries.
January 1919, with the end of German occupation, recognized Denikin’s rule. 19 February 1919, lacking Denikin's support, declined to stand for re-election as Ataman of the Don Army. Emigrated to Germany and engaged in lit work.
1941-1945 helped form Cossack units from Soviet prisoners-of-war, used in operations against Soviet troops. Advocated formation of a separate Cossack State under German protection. 1945 captured by Allied troops and turned over to Soviet authorities.
