1915 graduate Petrograd Military Medical Academy.
Specialized in physiology under Academy I. P. Pavlov. 1925-1936 sci assistant to Pavlov, Physiological Department, Pavlov All-Union Institute of Experimental Medical (now Institute of Experimental Medical, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences). 1926, under Pavlov’s supervision, conducted research on the functions of the cerebral hemispheres which provided the basis for the theory of the dynamic stereotype.
1928-1930 did research at Professor Hill’s Physiological Laboratory, London. 1931-1952 head, Chair of Normal Physiology, 1st Leningrad Medical Institute and head, Physiological Laboratory, State Roentgenological Institute. From 1936 member, British Royal Social of Physiologists.
1936-1964 head, Physiological Department and sci director, Pavlov All-Union Institute of Experimental Medical 1949 published Pavlov’s Lektsii po fiziologii (Lectures on Physiology). 1949-1964 did research on the analytic and synthetic activity of the cerebral cortex in animals under natural behavioral conditions.
Designed special chamber to study the situational reflexes of dogs in various spatial conditions. From 1950 chairman, Leningrad Social of Physiologists, Biochemists and Pharmacologists. 1959-1964 chairman, Centr Council, Pavlov All-Union Physiological Social.
Organizer and exec secretary, 1st All-Union Congress of Physiologists. Delivered papers at 13th, 15th, 19th and 20th International Congresses of Physiologists and at 1st International Neurological Congress, Brussels. Devised improved methods and apparatus for studying conditioned reflexes, including sound-proof chambers and equipment for recording higher nervous processes.
Also studied the functional structure of cortical excitation and contributed to the further development of Pavlov's theory of neuroses. Attributed great significance in the development of neuroses to inertness and inadequate regeneration of the cortical cells, pathological irradiation of the process of inhibition, disturbance of the guard mechanism, explosivity and new pathogenic factors. Added considerably to knowledge of the tonic reflexes of the spinal cord.
Also did research on the effect of ionizing radiation on the central nervous system in animals. Member, editorial board, journals Byulleten’ eksperimental’noy biologii i meditsiny and Fiziologichesltiy zhurnal USSR imeni /. M. Sechenova; chief cd, Zhurnal vysshey nervnoy deyatel’nosti imeni 1.
P. Pavlova', co-ed, physiology section, Bol'shaya meditsinskaya entsiklopediya (Large Medical Encyclopedia) (2nd ed). Wrote some 150 works.
