1903 assistant professor, Bazanova Clinic of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases. 1904-1907 assistant professor, from 1907 associate professor, P. North. Lebedev’s Laboratory, Moscow University. 1910 wrote classic master’s thesis on thermal conductivity of rarified gasas.
1911 defended doctor’s thesis the fading of paints and pigments in the visible spectrum. In same year resigned from Moscow University with other scholars in protest against policies of Education Minister Kasso. From 1912 prot, Moscow Higher Technical College.
1918 commissioned by Lenin to organize research on iron deposits near Kursk (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly), the results of which made an important contribution to theoretical geophysics and, subsequently, to the Soviet economics. 1919-1931 founder-director, Institute of Physics and Biophysics, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic People's Commissariat of Health. 1938-1942 director, Biophysical Laboratory, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Organized the production of new x-ray equipment in the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Trained such outstanding biophysicists as North. T. Fyodorov, South. V. Kravkov, A. V. Lebedinskiy, P. A. Rebinder, East. V. Shpol’skiy, V. V. Shuleykin and South. I. Vavilov.
From 1940 vice-president, Moscow Social of Natural Sciences. Wrote over 500 works.
