1919-1921 professor, Samara University: 1921-1937 professor, Moscow University. Specialized in history of Ancient Greece and Rome and history of Christianity. In his latter years also studied history of international relations on the eve ofWW 1.
1928 and 1933 attended International Historians' Congresses in Oslo and Warsaw. In early 1930's criticized for “anti-Marxist” distortions in his coverage of ancient history. 1937 arrested by State Security organs.
