1887-1898 associate professor, from 1898 professor Chair of Mineralogy, Saint St. Petersburg University. Took part in Dokuchayev’s expeditions to study the soil, geology and hydrogeology of the Nizhniy Novgorod, then Poltava Provinces.
1899—1907 soil and geological research in various areas of Centr Russia. Studied iron ores of central zone and clays of southern zone of Russian Plain. 19.22—, on the basis of a study of the processes accompanying the initial stages of soil formation, published a work on the weathering of feldspars.
His soil studies proved of practical value to road-building and civil engineering
