Pyotr Vasilievich graduated from the faculty of Russian language and literature of the Voronezh State Pedagogical University (1941).
Since 1953 Pyotr Vasilievich worked at the Department of Russian Literature, since 1961 at the Department of Philosophy of Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, was the dean of the faculty of defectology (1956). He was a head (1982-1985), professor (since 1985) of the department of Ethics and Aesthetics of Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.
Author of many works, including monographs: "Essays on Russian Aesthetics of the First Half of the 19th Century" (St. Petersburg, 1972, part 1; 1975, part 2), "Belinsky Aesthetics" (Moscow, 1978). Sobolev’s memories of his studies at the Voronezh State Pedagogical University were published in the materials of the "Eichenbaum Readings - 5" (Voronezh, 2004, part 1).
