Qaboos bin Said was serving in British troops for some time which were quartered in Germany. After separation from service he was studying the work of British local self-government then he started a world tour. After coming home in 1964 he didn’t found the mutual understanding with his father and after a year was putted under home arrest which lasted 6 years.
While being under the arrest he was making a plot against his father with his British friends who were allowed to visit him. The palace revolution on July 27, 1970 was the result of all this actions. The ruling Sultan stepped down from the throne for the charge of the son. Qaboos bin Said kept not only the position of the head of the Sultanate but also the positions of prime-minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense.
Having received practically unlimited power young monarch immediately started changes. After a month of his ruling he proclaimed united countries: instead of Muscat Sultanate and Immat Omanat a new government appeared – the united Oman Sultanate and the Sultan was called “Your Majesty” instead of “Your Highness”.
During first two years of bin Said’s ruling Oman became the member of League of Arab States and U.N.O., set up a diplomatic relationship with neighbor countries, USA, Great Britain and France, joined the nonaligned movement.
When Qaboos bin Said became the ruler of the Sultanate, the country numbered three primary schools for boys, 10 kilometers of roads and one hospital on twelve beds and at the same time the country is rich in oil and controls the Strait of Hormuz through which approximately 60 % of oil exports. Sultan headed for democratization of economic, attraction of local work force, which helped to turn Oman into one of the leaders in Arabian region in economic and political spheres.
Everything that happens in this little country happens with the knowing of His Majesty. But it mustn’t be said that there is no democracy in Oman. The Sultan managed to eliminate archaic survivals of the past being the head of the Muslim country at the same time. During his ruling people stopped to close the gates of the capital at night, the prohibition about smoking on the street was eliminated, the purchasing of radio was allowed. The old principle “Shura” was given a new impulse (making a decision as a result of council, agreement or consensus)- from 1999 an elected legislature “ Shura’s Council” exists.
Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said is very famous among the people of his country. Every year he travels around the regions for three weeks, familiarizing with problems of his people. This turns into a large hustings of course which gives a lot of sympathy for him from citizens. Sultan is famous for his generosity: he makes contributions to sick people, disadvantaged families from private funds, also he contributes to different social funds 9 support for young people, immigrants) not only in Oman but far away from lieutenant
Sultan Omana is one of the richest persons in the world. He is known as connoisseur of literature, music and monuments. Unfortunately Sultan doesn’t have children who could continue father’s work. He must name the heir to the throne himself according the constitution.
The home policy of Sultan was directed on social problems
