Appointed to Royal Ayr and Wigtown Militia, 1879. Granted commission, 1886, in Royal Scots Fusiliers for services on Indian frontier and in Burma. Served Burma, 1885-1887, as Staff Officer, Transport, and Aide-de-camp to G.O.C.
Present at capture of Minhla Forts and surrender of Mandalay (despatches twice, medal with clasp).
Tirah campaign, 1897-1898, on staff of General Sir William Lockhart, including assault and capture of Sampagha Pass (medal with two clasps). South Africa campaign, 1899-1902, with Royal Scots Fusiliers, and took part in relief of Ladysmith and Mafeking, actions of Colenso, Vaalkrantz, Pieters Hill, Tugela Heights and Rooidam, operations in Western Transvaal, 1900.
Afterwards on staff as Provost-Marshal (despatches, promoted Major, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, medal with six clasps, King"s medal with two clasps). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1902.
