Qurratulain Hyder was born on January 27, 1927, in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. She was a daughter of Sajjad Hyder Yildirim and Nazr Sajjad Hyder. She was named after a notable Iranian poet Qurrat-ul-Ain Tahira.
Qurratulain Hyder studied at Indraprastha College for Women. She also attended the University of Lucknow where she received a Master of Arts degree in English literature.
Qurratulain Hyder moved to Pakistan in 1947, where she started to work for the Ministry of information. Later she moved to the United Kingdom and worked for the BBC. In 1961 she returned to India and in 1964, she took a post of managing editor in Imprint journal. She held this post until 1978. Hyder also worked as a visiting lecturer at the universities of California, Chicago, Wisconsin, and Arizona. She was visiting professor at the Urdu Department at Aligarh Muslim University.
Qurratulain Hyder published her first novel in 1959. Her other works include Mere bhi sanamkhane (My Temples, Too), Patjhar ki awaaz (The Sound of Falling Leaves), The Street Singers of Lucknow, and Other Stories and A Season of Betrayals: A Short Story and Two Novellas. Her literary works include some 12 novels and novellas and four collections of short stories. Besides, Hyder translated works of world literature from English into Urdu and worked as a radio and magazine journalist.
Qurratulain Hyder, also known as Ainee Apa, was an Indian writer and educator, who was famous for her Urdu novels and stories. Her famous novel is Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire).
Qurratulain Hyder received the Jnanpith Award in 1989, for Aakhir-e-Shab ke Hamsafar (Travellers Unto the Night). She also received the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Soviet Land Nehru Award, and Ghalib Award. In 1967, she received the Sahitya Akademi Award, for Patjhar ki Awaz (The Sound of Falling Leaves). In 2000, Hyder received Bahadur Shah Zafar Award. She also received the Padma Bhushan from the Government of India in 2005.
