In this work intended as an introduction to the works of Updike, Mrs. Burchard offers a trenchant analysis of the Updike phenomenon. Tracing the themes of continuity and divergence through Updike’s two poetry anthologies, five novels, and four collections of short stories, Mrs. Burchard shows the philosophical growth of this complex writer whose heroes are lonely searchers for salvation through religion or sex.
