Bujnowski was born in Wadowice, Poland, on February 3, 1974.
Rafał Bujnowski attended the Cracow University of Technology (or Tadeusz Kościuszko University of Technology) from 1993 to 1995, where he studied architecture. Then he moved on to graphic design and studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts (or Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts) from 1995 till 2000.
Bujnowski directed a project called Galeria Otwarta in Krakow between 1998 and 2001. It was an exhibition space that commonly consisted of two, maximum four, billboards constructed in the city centre. His artworks have always related to public space.
Rafał Bujnowski is mostly a painter. He draws most of his inspiration directly from the surroundings. His leitmotifs are simplified and placed against a neutral background, which is the case with Chocolate (2004) and Paintings-Trophies series of antlers and hunting trophies (2003). The artist uses various mediums in his painting and constantly challenges traditions.
He is the author of the series Paintings-Objects (1999-2002), which is made up of Bricks (1999), Blackboard (1999) and 180 Minute Cassette (2000). He created up to 100 copies of each piece and sold some of them at the same price as the original ones. Rafał Bujnowski returned to this reification of art in his series Backs of Paintings and Household Articles (both 2000). He created prints that imitated the packaging of items like matches, condoms or nails, or objects that were still partially hidden by their wrapping, for instance, audio cassettes in transparent plastic boxes.
Several of the Bujnowski's projects combined both painting and video (such as Flowers or Nails, both 2005). In 2006, Rafał Bujnowski offered to paint banners for various political parties and organisations, irrespective of their political option. Eventually, only left-wing organisations responded. After being used in actual street marches, the banners by Bujnowski were then presented in a gallery exhibit.
Nowadays, Rafał Bujnowski lives and works in Krakow.
