ARÉVALO GONZÁLEZ, Rafael was born on September 13, 1866 in Río-Chico. Son of Demetrio Arévalo and Agueda González.
In 1885 joined the socalled Delpinismo movement opposing Guzmán Blanco. Subsequently imprisoned for political activities. Opposed President Andueza Palacio in the movement which led to the civil war of 1892.
With the successful coup d’état of the latter, went into seclusion to avoid imprisonment.
Following the triumph of the Legalist Revolution in 1893, accepted post of assistant director of the National Telegraph System. Imprisoned on five occasions for his opposition to General Cipriano Castro.
Refused a ministerial portfolio and presidency of the State of Zulia as contrary to his political ideals. Founder of the literary review Atenas.
Director of El Pregonero (previously suppressed by the Castro regime), 1909.
Has subsequently been subjected fourteen times to political incarceration for periods as long as eight and one-half years.
