Rafael started his amateur boxing career at age ten. In June 2011, Rafael lost to an undefeated Miguel Ángel García, this bout was televised on Home Box Office"s undercard of Julio César Chávez, Junior. versus Sebastian Zbik.
On October 18, 2011 Guzmán was shot eight times before dying in his hometown of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
