Herbst began his career as a teaching assistant at the National University of Tucuman in 1960 and had held the position for six years. Also in 1960, he took a position of a research assistant at Miguel Lillo Institute National University of Tucuman. From 1965 Rafael became a researcher and then a senior researcher at National Scientific and Technical Research Council. From 1967 he was a professor at National University of the Northeast.
In addition, Herbst held a position of a researcher at the Higher Institute of Geological Correlation. He was a full professor in the Department of General Paleontology, Paleobotany and Palynology in the Faculty of Exact, Natural and Surveying Sciences of the National University of the Northeast. Rafael was also a visiting professor in the Department of Paleontology and Stratigraphy at the Institute of Basic Sciences of the University National of Asuncion.
Herbst was a counselor of the Regional Council of International Trademark Association in Corrientes on behalf of the Scientific and Advisory Community of the Secretary General of Sciences and Techniques of the National University of the Northeast. Since 1960 he has participated actively in almost all Argentine geological and paleontological congresses as well as in scientific meetings abroad, particularly in the United States, Australia, Brazil and Germany.
Rafael Herbst married Maria Stella Cabezas. The marriage produced two children.
