Rahman was born Rashin Rahman on May 23, 1967, in Abu Dhabi, Trucial States (now United Arab Emirates). He is the son of K.M.A Rahman and Savi. He also has a younger sister Shameema.
Education
Rahman was educated at Baldwin Boys' High School in Bangalore, St. Joseph's School in Abu Dhabi, and Rex Higher Secondary School in Ooty. He then pursued a preuniversity degree at M.E.S. Mampad College in Malappuram.
Rahman started his acting career in the year 1983 with the Malayalam movie, Koodevide. At that time, he worked with most of the famous Malayalam directors. He also acted in many popular Malayalam movies like Kanamarayathu, Chilambu, Thammil Thammil, Pappan Priyappetta Pappan, Uyarangalil, Vaartha, Upaharam, Poomukhappadiyil Ninneyum Kathu and much more. Then in the early 1990s, he started to concentrate on Tamil and Telugu films. After a long gap, he acted in the Malayalam movies named Mazhavilkoodaram, King Soloman and Hitlist.
In the year 1986, he made his Tamil debut with the movie Nilave Malare, directed by S. A. Chandrasekhar. Then simultaneously he acted in the Tamil movies like Kanne Kaniyamuthe, Vasantha Raagam and Anbulla Appa. In the year 1989, he starred in the movies like Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal, Puriyaadha Pudhir and Nee Pathi Naan Pathi and completely shifted to Tamil and Telugu language movies.
In the year 1984, he acted in his first Telugu movie Manmadha Saamrajyam. Later in 1999, he worked in the Tamil movie Sangamam, directed by Suresh Krishna. In the following years, he acted in Tamil movies like Raam, Thoothukudi, Ethiri, Rahman, Billa and more.
After a long gap, he acted in the Telugu movie Dhariyam. After that movie, he acted in the Telugu movie titled Aalayam, directed by Muthyala Subbaiah. Then he starred in the investigation thriller movie Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, directed by Karthick Naren in the year 2016. For his performance in the movie received positive reviews from the critics. In the same year, he acted in the Malayalam movie Marupadi, directed by V.M. Vinu.
He appeared in seven films in 2017 and 2018, including Antariksham 9000 KMPH, Oru Mugathirai, Ranam, and other movies. He will also appear in 2019 in the film Seven as a police officer, and also in the film Virus.
Apart of his acting career, Rahman appeared in TV serials Kadhal Pagadai (1996-1998), and in Jagritha (2013). He also served as a judge at the reality show Super Jodi (2010).
Rahman is known today as one of the most prominent actors of India who has acted in more than 150 Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu movies.
Rahman received the State Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in his very first film; Koodevide. He also received the Film Critics Award and Chamber Award for this film.
In 1984, he received the Kerala Film Chamber Award for Best Actor for the film Ithiri Poove Chuvanna Poove.
Rahman received the Award for Trendsetter in the history of Malayalam cinema's 78 years at the Etisalat Everest Film awards held in Dubai in 2007. The public voted for Rahman for this award from the nominations including Kamal Hassan, Sreedevi, Manju Warrier and Nadhiya.
Rahman's Malayalam film Manjadikkuru, directed by Anjali Menon, received two awards at the 2008 International Film Festival in Kerala.
