Although well-versed in the history of philosophy, as evidenced in his early work Finalidade do mundo (1960), Farias Brito is considered one of the major forces behind the establishment of an independent Brazilian philosophical tradition. His later work is heavily influenced by modern psychology, as he strives to develop a philosophy of spirit which privileges thought over experience.
