Ralph Waldo Cordier was born on June 28, 1902 in Canton, Ohio, United States.
Cordier graduated from Manchester College. He then received a master's degree and a doctorate from the Ohio State University.
Cordier also worked on post-doctoral studies as a Ford Foundation Scholar at Columbia University and the University of London.
Ralph Cordier taught at Manchester College in Manchester, Indiana. Then he worked briefly at both Illinois University and Clarion State University, before joining Indiana University in 1946 as chair of the Department of Social Studies. He became Dean of Instruction in 1955 and Dean of Academic Affairs in 1960, retiring from that position in 1970.
In his career, Cordier published many textbooks for young people, beginning with "A History for Beginners" (1948), the first of a series of such volumes. His tenth and last book "Exploring Pennsylvania: Its History and Government" (written with S. K. Stevens and Florence Benjamin) went through three editions, the last of which was published in 1968.
Cordier also served on numerous committees for social studies associations and councils, and visited Morocco on behalf of the U.S. State Department in 1965, and Sierra Leone in 1966.
