Ralph Grizzle was born on the 27th of October, 1957 in Danville, Virginia, United States, the son of Eustace Frank and Joan Wallace Batten Grizzle.
Ralph Grizzle enrolled at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1988, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1990.
Grizzle began his writing career at the age of thirty-two, after spending the previous decade traveling. He bicycled across America and through Europe and visited many islands in the South Pacific. He spent a year in Australia and New Zealand, and from there traveled to Southeast Asia, where he backpacked and took buses through Bali and Java, took a boat to Singapore, and visited Thailand, Burma, India, Greece, and Switzerland before returning home. He paid for his travel by working in construction and as a server at restaurants and bars, and then visited Mexico and several countries in Central America.
In 1990, Ralph began working for the American Society of Travel Agents, editing their publication, ASTA Agency Management. He also worked as a managing editor for Pace Communications from 1990 to 1995. In 1995 he and the publication's editor resigned to start a fax publication, Cruise Week. This publication soon became a leading source of news in the cruise industry, and Grizzle was often quoted as an expert on the cruise industry in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the San Francisco Chronicle, and other periodicals. He and his partner eventually sold this publication and Grizzle launched Cruise Observer, a quarterly cruise newsletter that is distributed by travel agents to their clients. He also was a president of Kenilworth Media in Asheville.
Since 1995, Ralph is a president of Avid Travel Media Inc., a small publishing company focused primarily on providing travel insights and analysis. In 1997, he took the post of an editor for Avid Cruiser | River Cruise Advisor. From 1996 to 2009, he contributed to Hemispheres, United Airlines’ award-winning inflight magazine. Presently, he lives in Asheville, North Carolina and part of the year he spends near Copenhagen, Denmark.
Ralph Grizzle was commissioned by his alma mater, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, to research and write an oral history of CBS News correspondent Charles Kuralt, who had attended the university. In 2000, his book Remembering Charles Kuralt came out. He also wrote Day Trips from Raleigh-Durham in 2002. His most recent book The Ultimate River Cruising Handbook was published in 2018.

2018Quotations: "Even if you don’t consider yourself to be someone who would enjoy cruise travel, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Too many people think that the cruise experience would be too confining or that they wouldn’t like it. But that’s certainly not the case! On one particular river cruise when I wanted to stretch my legs, I was able to bicycle on paths alongside the Danube and meet the ship at the next port. Cruises offer a variety of ways to experience the region".
