Ramana M. Idury is a computer scientist and software engineer whose research spans algorithms, pattern matching, computational biology, bioinformatics, and search technology. He co-authored influential work on DNA sequence assembly and has held senior engineering roles at Celera, DNA Sciences, FineGround Networks, eBay, and Apple.
Background
Ramana Murthy Idury was born in 1964. His early academic and professional work connected theoretical computer science with computational biology, leading to research on string algorithms, genetic linkage computation, and DNA sequence assembly. He later developed a career in industrial software engineering and search technology in the United States.
Education
Idury completed a Master of Technology degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and earned a Ph.D. from Rice University. During his doctoral period at Rice, he conducted research in computer science on algorithms and computational problems with applications to biological sequence analysis.
Career
Idury began his research career in the early 1990s at Rice University, where he worked on algorithms for pattern matching, graph problems, genetic linkage computation, and computational biology. His academic research included collaboration with Alejandro A. Schäffer and Michael S. Waterman, including work that produced a widely recognized algorithm for DNA sequence assembly. From 1995 to 1999 he worked as a Senior Scientist in bioinformatics at Celera Corporation. In 1999–2000 he was an architect and engineer in bioinformatics at DNA Sciences, also known as Kiva Genetics. From 2000 to 2004 he served as a Principal Engineer at FineGround Networks. He then worked as a Staff Engineer in the Search Group at eBay from 2004 to 2005. Since 2005, he has worked at Apple in search engineering and is identified as a Distinguished Engineer in the Search Engine organization, based in the Sunnyvale, California area.
