Journalist in Bilbao, Madrid and London after travelling throughout Europe and Cuba: served as Spain’s Ambassador to Argentina in 1927. Born of a Basque father and a British mother, Maeztu was bilingual which afforded him numerous work opportunities in London.
In his Authority, Liberty and Function in the Light °f the War (1916), Maeztu develops an anti-liberal political theory. He blames German culture for many of Europe’s problems, including the war. Many critics have accused him of anti-German bias. Defensa de la hispanidad(1934) is the result of Maeztu’s Catholic and nationalistic thought.
