Ramon Valle-Inclán was born on October 28, 1866 in Villaneuva de Arosa, Galicia, Spain, in the family of Ramon del Valle-Inclan Bermudez and Dolores de la Pena y Montenegro del Valle-Inclan.
In 1887-1889 Ramón studied law at Instituto de Santiago de Compostela.
Ramon worked as a prominent playwright, novelist, poet, short story writer, and essayist, who from 1895 to the 1930s wrote twenty-four plays, twelve novels, seven story collections, three volumes of poetry, and assorted other titles, as well as translating and adapting many works from the French, Italian, and Portuguese, wrote for Spanish newspapers Globo and Diario de Pontevedra in the 1880s. He also wrote for Mexican newspapers Correo Espanol and Universal in the early 1890s. Moreover, he served as correspondent on the Western Front during World War I for the Spanish paper Imparcial.
Ramon is considered perhaps the most noteworthy and certainly the most radical dramatist working to subvert the traditionalism of the Spanish theatrical establishment in the early part of the 20th century.
Ramon invented a new genre: the esperpento, in which all the elements of drama are satirically distorted to create Goyaesque images of horror and comedy. In addition to his esperpentos, he is also known for his novels, particularly the Sonatas, elegantly styled, fictive memoirs of the rakish Marquis de Bradomin.
Ramon's political views changed from traditional absolutism (in Spain known as Carlismo) towards anarchism.
Ramon despised literary realism and openly disregarded Benito Pérez Galdós, its most prominent Spanish representative. All his life he struggled to live up to his bohemian ideals, and stayed loyal to his aestheticist beliefs.
Physical Characteristics: Valle-Inclan wore long hair, a beard, and a cape, often carried a cane, and presented himself as an eccentric, bohemian writer.
On August 24, 1907, Ramon married an actress Josefina Angela Blanco, but they divorced in 1932. They gave birth to six children. Their second son drowned.
