Following a brief professional playing career, Mazey began his coaching career in 1990 as an assistant at Clemson. He was the head coach of Charleston Southern from 1994–1996 and East Carolina from 2003–2005, leading both teams to National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament appearances. Following seven years as an assistant at Texas Christian, Mazey was named the head coach at West Virginia in July 2012.
