Randy Thornhill was born on December 7, 1944 in Alabama, United States. He is the son of Albert Thornhill and Flo Pickens Thornhill.
Randy Thornhill studied at Decatur High School. He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Auburn University. In 1974 Randy got a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan.
Randy Thornhill began his career at the University of Florida as a Research Entomologist in 1975. From 1990 to 1991 he was a Humboldt Fellow at Bielefeld University. In 1990 Randy was also appointed as a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Mexico. Currently, he is Professor of Biology Emeritus.
Randy Thornhill wrote four books and over 150 papers. His works has been featured in many newspapers, magazines, TV shows and radio programs, including an interview on The Today Show. In 2000 Randy published the book A Natural History of Rape. In this controversial book the author uses evolutionary biology to explain the causes of rape and to recommend new approaches to its prevention. The book includes a useful summary of evolutionary theory and a comparison of evolutionary biology's and social science's explanations of human behavior.
