Ranry Ikebe was born in 1726. He was the son of Kakurin Ikebe, a scholar in the Kumamoto Clan.
He was taught by his father to read Chinese classics when a child. A prodigy, he sometimes substituted his father to teach his disciples even when a boy.
The lord of Kumamoto gave him a scholarship. After his father’s death, he took over his post as clan instructor. He often took the place of Gyokuzan Akiyama, another clan teacher who lectured on Chinese classics.
He read all Chinese philosophers, and historians and even popular novels. His extremely retentive memory surprised many people. He was able to compose poems and prose with amazing dexterity and speed.
