A tree cannot keep secrets because its roots discreetly meet those of other trees and share its thoughts. Raphael Confiant was born on the 25th of January, 1951 in Le Lorrain, Martinique.
Raphael Confiant attended Schoelcher College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned diplomas in political studies, control of English, literary studies, linguistics at the Sciences Po Aix. He also studied law at Paul Cézanne University in Aix-en-Provence, France. He held a doctorate in Regional Languages and Cultures.
At the beginning of his career, Raphael Confiant was an English teacher from 1977 to 1996. He was appointed as a lecturer in languages and regional cultures at the University of Antilles and Guyana (now University of the French West Indies and Guiana) in 1997. He was active in trade union activities, being secretary of the education section of Central Trade Union of Martiniquais Workers from 1982 to 1985.
During the 1970s, Confiant was a militant proponent of the use of the Creole language. He also collaborated with Jean Bernabé and Patrick Chamoiseau to create the créolité movement, which tries to find out the diverse identities and histories of the people of the Antilles through the objects of literature and language.
Raphael Confian has been a founding member of newspapers and periodicals. His first short stories, Jik dèyè do Bondyé, came out in the Creole language in 1979. In 1988, he wrote a novel, Le Nègre et l'Amiral in French. Among his 19 novels are Nuée Ardente, that was written in 2002, La Panse du Chacal in 2004, Adèle et la pacotilleuse in 2005, Case à Chine in 2007, and L’hôtel du bon plaisir in 2009.
