The unusual title of this book comes from a poem written by one of the author's young patients and describes most poignantly her struggle against great odds to fill the emptiness in her life. Ant this is a unique book because it can rightfully be called the only controlled study of individual psychotherapy with delinquent girls reported up to this time. As such it is part of a most important breakthrough, the scientifically validated discovery that youthful as well as seasoned sociopaths can be successfully and dramatically changed - a fact which is now, paradoxically, beginning to bring new hope and a hew perspective to the entire field of psychotherapy. The "untreatables" have become treatable but only because treatment has become something different. This is a new method of re-education involving intensive, demanding, but loving interaction between persons, in a broadly family type atmosphere that is producing results which classical forms of psychotherapy and rehabilitation could not demonstrate in a scientifically acceptable way. What emerges is a form of "relationship therapy" which is patently an advance over the detachment and purely intellectual interest of therapists of a former day.
