Education
Tobias studied law at the University of Sydney, where he took the Bachelor of Laws degree. The university was founded under an 1850 Act of the New South Wales Parliament and is Australia's oldest university. Its law school was inaugurated in 1855 as one of the university's first three faculties, alongside Arts and Medicine, although for decades its work was primarily examination rather than teaching. A full program of legal instruction began in 1890, when Pitt Cobbett was appointed as the first dean, and John Peden led the school as dean from 1910 to 1942.
Tobias also studied at the University of Oxford, one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world, whose teaching is organized through its colleges.
