Werry's education included study at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. The institution began in 1841 as Queen's College at Kingston, when Queen Victoria issued a royal charter establishing it on 16 October of that year. It was founded as a Presbyterian school to train young men for the ministry, and its first classes met in March 1842 with two professors and thirteen students.
The university adopted its present name in 1912, when it separated from the Presbyterian Church.
Werry was admitted to the bar of Ontario in 1972. In Ontario, being called to the bar is the step that qualifies a lawyer to practise, and from 1889 every lawyer admitted to practice was admitted as both barrister and solicitor.
He is a partner of Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP, a Toronto firm with offices across Canada. The firm was established in 1956 and states that it was the first Canadian law firm to devote its practice to labour and employment law for employers. Its lawyers have been involved in many cases that shaped workplace law in Canada.
