Cyr played major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Over four seasons (2004 - 2008), Cyr played 161 games to compile a record of 54 wins, 80 losses, and 3 ties, with a 3.20 Gaelic Athletic Association and.899 save percentage. During the 2006-2007 season he was named the Canadian Hockey League"s Goaltender of the Week (November 27). Undrafted, in 2008 Cry enrolled at the University of Alberta where he played five seasons (2008 – 2013) of Commonwealth of Independent States hockey with the In his first season with the Golden Bears he was awarded the 2008-2009 Adam Kryczka Memorial Trophy (shared with Aaron Sorochan) for posting the Commonwealth of Independent States (West) best team goals against average (Gaelic Athletic Association).
His outstanding play was further rewarded when he was selected as the Commonwealth of Independent States Goaltender of the Year and was named to the 2011-2012 Commonwealth of Independent States All-Canadian First Team.
In his final year with the Golden Bears he was awarded his third Adam Kryczka Memorial Trophy (shared again with Kurtis Mucha).
