Completed Feodosiya High School. Studied at Law Faculty, Moscow University.
Expelled from university for taking part in student riots. 1900 first work printed. Sided with Symbolists.
Worked for journals “Vesy”, “Zolotoye runo” and Acmeist organ “Apollon”. Lived for many years in Paris and was strongly influenced by French poets Verlaine and Renier and by Impressionist painters. Studied painting and produced some well-known Crimean water colors.
Opposed 1917 October Revol. From 1917 lived at Koktebel’, Crimea. During October Revol and Civil War adopted the stand of being “above the conflict”, urging people to “be a man, and not a citizen”.
Translated French poetry into Russian. Wrote articles on many aspects of culture and art, partially collected in the book Liki tvorchestva (The Faces of Art).
