Aguilar is currently a freelance reporter and television commentator for KTXD-television She has worked as a television reporter at WDHO-television in Toledo Ohio, KRIS-television in Corpus Christi, Texas, KENS-television, San Antonio, Texas, United States of America Today on television in Washington, District of Columbia, KPNX-television in Phoenix, Arizona, National Broadcasting Company, LA, California-television in Los Angeles, California, and KDFW-television, Dallas, Texas. Her first reporting post in 1981 was at American Broadcasting Company in Toledo. In 2005, Texas Associated Press named her reporter of the year. Aguilar was suspended by KDFW-television, a Fox affiliate, on 16 October 2007 following an interview the previous day with a 70-year-old salvage merchant when she held his car door open preventing him from leaving and berated him with accusations such as being "trigger happy." Aguilar told a media critic in Dallas that the news managers gave her the assignment and approved the interview to air on KDFW, but made her the scapegoat when numerous viewers complained to the station.
She received threats for the report.
According to the station the interview was "overly aggressive". Following her dismissal in March 2008, she filed a case with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
She unsuccessfully sued Fox for wrongful dismissal, losing the jury trial in December 2010. In August 2009, Aguilar set up Wise Latinas Linked, a social networking group on Facebook.
Today Wise Latinas Linked has a following of more than 5,000 women.
