Ryan is best known for playing the role of Debbie Gallagher in the Channel 4 drama series Shameless from 2004 to 2009, Carly Hope in the Independent Television soap opera Emmerdale in 2006, and as Vicki MacDonald in the British Broadcasting Corporation school drama Waterloo Road from 2009 to 2011. She is currently starring in the United Kingdom tour of Beryl, written by her Shameless costar, Maxine Peake. She made her stage debut in Scarborough by Fiona Evans at London"s Royal Court in 2008, and subsequently appeared in "Lost Monsters" at the Everyman in Liverpool.
In May 2014, Ryan toured in the production of A Taste of Honey Derby.
In February 2015 Ryan starred in the Derby "s Solace of the Road playing the characters Holly and Solace. Radio In 2007, she played the title character in the award-winning radio play Abigail Adams.
