Career
Rebecca H. Latimer spent many years as the wife of an American diplomat whose career took the couple around the world. When her husband retired from diplomatic service to work at a university, Latimer began writing for magazines and newspapers. Her book You're Not Old until You’re Ninety, written when she was 92 years old, offers positive advice for the elderly. She promotes the benefits of daily meditation, of eating right, and of maintaining a variety of interests. Barbara Schroder of Senior World Online called the book "a how-to manual for a worthwhile old-age rather than one spent in a rocking chair."
Latimer told CA: "When I married, my husband was just starting out in the American Foreign Service. Our first post was El Salvador, which, in 1929, was not an ideal place for Americans. Our marines were chasing Sandino in Nicaragua, and all Central America hated us. The next post was Tallinn. Estonia. My husband said, ‘Out of the frying pan, into the Frigidaire!’ In Estonia we met Charles Lindbergh and his wife. Then came three years in Helsinki, Finland, and Istanbul. Turkey, where our son Douglas was born. Then came World War II, and I took Doug back to the United States. Eighteen months later my husband joined us, and we went off to Tegucigalpa. Honduras, where John was born. Then there was Panama, then four years in the United States, and then Ankara. Turkey, which completed our twenty-five years in consulates and embassies. We retired, and my husband got his Ph.D. at Princeton and began teaching."
"As the State Department had wanted to review everything a diplomat’s wife submitted for publication, I didn't write, other than detailed journals. In 1954, free of the State Department’s cold eye, I began writing."
She was also a contributor to magazines, including Harper’s, House and Garden, New Yorker, and Western Humanities Review.
